Type 1 diabetes and obesity

I am 58 and have had Type 1 diabetes since 16 months of age. Although I haven't suffered any major diabetes-related complications, I am 5'3" and weigh 280 pounds.
I have tried Symlin injections and various diets, but have never been able to lose more than 30-40 pounds. (Symlin was the most effective; but I got tired of the injections and the occasional serious hypoglycemia that resulted, so now use it only to bring down a highly elevated BG).
I'm also a certified diabetes nurse educator and know that my image does not represent a healthy picture of diabetes. I know it will take at least a year to lose the weight in an intelligent manner. My daughter is getting married in 8 months, and I would like to have lost at least 50-80 pounds by then.
What would you suggest to get and stay motivated, as I get discouraged and give up after a month or two?
Thank you.
