Famous People With Obesity
Why this Strange Fascination?
Famous people with obesity: why are we so interested in them?
I don’t know about you, but when I’m standing in line at the supermarket checkout I can’t resist a good peek at a certain kind of magazine. You know the kind I’m talking about!
They pay paparazzi and members of the public obscene sums of money to catch celebrities unawares, without the protection of their make-up artists and stylists.
In the harsh light of day, with no airbrushing or artful movie lighting, they’re cruelly exposed for what they are… human beings like you and me.
Nowhere to Hide for Celebrities with Obesity
I’ve never bought one of those magazines, but I always leave the supermarket feeling a little better about myself in a way that’s difficult to describe. Those pictures, unkind as they may be, come as a welcome antidote to the impossibly perfect images adoring the covers of the publications sitting beside them on the shelves.
A similar motivation is, I think, behind our fascination with famous people with obesity. It’s somehow reassuring to know that wealth and fame don’t always buy you immunity from the problems of ordinary mortals like you and me.

Maradona's Triumph over Obesity and Addiction
And soccer icon Diego Maradona has shown in dramatic fashion how obesity can be beaten, with his transformation from obese cocaine addict to trim, television host and ballroom dancer.
Of course, Maradona needed to resort to the drastic and costly measure of gastric bypass surgery, as well as extensive counselling top treat his drug habit, but pictures showing him before and after his recent massive weight loss have brought new hope to many.
Another celebrity who has battled with obesity is former Cheers star, Kirstie Alley. Her more recent TV show Fat Actress is an unflinching satire on how society views famous people with obesity. Ironically, since then, Alley has slimmed down dramatically and is reportedly happier and healthier than she’s been in years.
