Well There You Have It! by: Anonymous
Well there you have it! A perfect example of Obesity Prejudice! The comment made by this person simply puts the exclamation point on how people tend to make assumptions about obese people and therefore call them "lazy", a "burden on society", etc. I have worked in the medical field of Metabolic Health for over 10 years now. As a medical professional I have seen numerous patients who are obese, not by choice, but by other causes. There are a number of metabolic problems that actually do cause people to gain weight and make it next to impossible to take it off. There are also many medications that can cause excess weight gain as well.
Granted, there are those who make the choice to overeat and therefore they gain weight. This is unhealthy and can cause life long health problems if changes to lifestyle are not made. Many obese people were sexually abused as children and need attention to their emotional needs. These people need help to get on a lifestyle track and learn about healthy eating, the psychological reasons they eat and how to be active with a specific exercise plan suited to their present size and ability. However, the cruelty of society on those who have different body shapes and sizes is merciless. If you think that these people are not in pain, or don't wish for a different life than they have, you are naive. They wish for a day when then can sit in a theater seat, buckle a seat belt, get on the floor and play with a child, breathe or walk without difficulty, go to a gym to exercise without sideways glances and whispers in the locker room, and fit in a seat on a airplane without having to purchase two tickets.
The judgment of society on these people is no different than that of the playground bully who sees himself or herself as better than others. Don't judge people that you don't even know. You have not walked in their shoes, or felt their hurts, or cried their tears. To assume they are simply lazy and gluttonous is to judge where you have not walked. The words "pick on someone your own size" fit perfectly here. You would be well served to sit and talk with someone of size and hear from them what they have battled and how society's treatment toward them has affected their life. But only do this if you are brave enough to set your own prejudice aside and listen to another human being's heart. If you are unable to do this, you will only cause them more pain that they don't need and you, yourself are to be much pitied.
